about

69 and still going strong, Totó La Momposina is the voice of Afro-Colombian music, a genuine Queen of Cumbia whose entire life has been dedicated to the music of her country s Caribbean coastline. Gone are the days when this music was disparaged and its heritage denied, today it is heard throughout the world and artists who have sampled or used her work include Timbaland (his Indian Flute samples Totó s Curura ), Manu Chao (he borrowed a chorus from La Verdolaga ) and Michel Cleis, in his 2009 cumbia-house mega hit La Mezcla , sampled lead vocals and more from Totó s El Pescador . La Bodega , her new album, captures all the energy and range of her career so far. With Afro-Colombian percussion, blazing horns, traditional gaita flutes and rippling guitar, this upbeat set of new compositions and vintage classics, gives us Totó La Momposina at her rootsy sparkling best. Because, at heart, Totó is still a cantadora, the village woman who does everything from the healing with herbs and giving marital advice, to running celebrations and leading the songs. It s just that today, her village is our world.
